What it really is

Matomo — open-source web analytics platform with self-hosted and cloud options.

Our take

Matomo is a full-featured Google Analytics alternative built around data ownership and GDPR compliance. The DB lists the category as SEO and prices at $19/mo — both are outdated: Matomo is a web analytics platform, and cloud plans now start at €29/mo, while the core self-hosted platform is free forever. It uniquely lets you run the same software on your own server (free) or on Matomo's EU-hosted cloud (paid), giving privacy-first teams a genuine choice.

Why we rate it

Matomo is one of the few analytics tools that earns trust on both technical and ethical grounds: open-source code, no data sampling, cookieless tracking options, and a self-hosted path that costs nothing. For EU-regulated teams it removes the GA4 compliance headache entirely.

The catch

Self-hosting requires server setup, maintenance, and PHP/MySQL expertise. Cloud is affordable at starter scale but jumps to custom pricing quickly. The plugin ecosystem is narrower than Google Analytics, and the UI feels dated compared to modern BI tools.

Best for
Privacy-first and GDPR-regulated organizations needing full data ownership
Teams migrating off Google Analytics 4 without sacrificing feature depth
Developers who want to self-host analytics with no per-hit costs
Not good for
Non-technical users who need a no-maintenance, zero-setup solution
Teams heavily reliant on Google ecosystem integrations (Ads, Search Console, Looker)
High-traffic sites on cloud plan where costs can escalate quickly
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate — cloud signup is fast (no CC required for trial), but self-hosted setup requires server provisioning, PHP/MySQL config, and JS tag deployment.
Scale breakpoint
Cloud per-plan pricing becomes expensive above 2M hits/mo; self-hosted scales freely but ops burden grows with traffic and multi-server setups.
Walled garden
Low — data stays on your infrastructure (self-hosted) or can be exported; open API and data portability between cloud and on-premise are core promises.
