What it really is

Plausible Analytics — privacy-first web analytics platform and Google Analytics alternative.

Our take

Plausible is a genuinely excellent privacy-focused analytics tool: cookie-free, GDPR/CCPA/PECR compliant by design, and refreshingly simple. The DB categorises it under 'SEO' — that is a mislabel; Plausible is a web analytics product, not an SEO tool. Pricing in the DB ($9/mo) reflects the correct Starter cloud plan entry price, though a free self-hosted Community Edition (AGPLv3) also exists, making the effective price tier freemium.

Why we rate it

Plausible earns its place as the go-to GA alternative for privacy-first teams: fast script, dead-simple dashboard, solid compliance story, and a genuine open-source option. The Business tier adds enough depth (funnels, ecommerce, custom properties) to cover most analytical needs without GA's complexity.

The catch

Intentionally limited by design — no user-level tracking, no session recordings, no advanced segmentation beyond Business-tier custom properties. Large enterprises needing raw data pipelines or SSO must go Enterprise (custom pricing).

Best for
Privacy-conscious publishers and SaaS teams needing GDPR-compliant analytics
Developers self-hosting on their own infrastructure (free CE)
Agencies managing multiple client sites on a shared pageview quota
Not good for
Enterprise teams requiring deep funnel, attribution, or user-journey BI beyond Business tier
Sites dependent on Google Analytics audience segments for ad retargeting
Teams migrating historical data from another analytics platform
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: add a single <1 KB script tag to your site and data flows within minutes — no tag manager or cookie setup required.
Scale breakpoint
Pageview-based billing means costs rise as traffic grows; 10M+ pageviews require negotiating an Enterprise contract. Self-hosted CE requires DevOps overhead at scale.
Walled garden
Low: dashboards can be shared publicly or embedded; Stats API available on Business; Google Analytics import supported; data is portable.
