What it really is

A free, open-source CLI tool that generates entire codebases from natural-language prompts - the precursor to the commercial platform now rebranded as Lovable.

Our take

It was a landmark experiment: describe software in plain English, and the CLI writes files, runs code and iterates on improvements using your own API keys (OpenAI, Anthropic, local models). It's developer-only, runs locally, and costs only API usage (~$0.10-2 per generation) - the commercial gptengineer.app product evolved into Lovable and is a separate paid service.
