What it really is

Neon — serverless PostgreSQL database with scale-to-zero compute and instant Git-style branching.

Our take

The DB completely mislabels Neon as 'a platform for AI model deployment and real-time inference,' which is incorrect. Neon (neon.tech) is a serverless Postgres service distinguished by copy-on-write database branching, per-second billing, and scale-to-zero compute. Acquired by Databricks in May 2025, it cut compute prices 15–25% and slashed storage from $1.75 to $0.35/GB-month. The free tier doubled its compute allowance and is genuinely useful for development workloads.

Why we rate it

Neon's branching model solves a real developer pain point around parallel environments. Scale-to-zero eliminates idle database costs, and the post-Databricks pricing reductions make it genuinely competitive with managed Postgres alternatives.

The catch

Usage-based billing can be hard to predict at scale. Connection pooling setup is required for serverless runtimes, adding friction for newcomers.

Best for
Developers building on Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, or AWS Lambda needing serverless-native Postgres
Teams wanting per-PR database branches for isolated integration testing
Startups that need to scale from free tier to production without migrating databases
Not good for
Applications requiring persistent always-on connections without cold-start latency
Legacy workloads needing Oracle or MySQL compatibility
Teams with strict data residency requirements outside supported regions
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: first Postgres branch provisioned in under 30 seconds via web console or CLI.
Scale breakpoint
Usage billing becomes complex beyond ~10 active branches; storage at $0.35/GB compounds for data-heavy apps.
Walled garden
Low: standard Postgres wire protocol means migrations away from Neon are straightforward with standard pg_dump tooling.
