Conversion Gems editorial verdict
Free (Community, 32 IPs); Enterprise custom
Features8/10
8 - comprehensive scanning, Real Risk Score, asset discovery, and remediation guidance; no native container or cloud-asset coverage.
Value6/10
6 - free Community tier is a genuine asset for evaluation; Enterprise pricing is opaque and expensive at scale relative to SaaS alternatives.
Ease of use5/10
5 - on-premise deployment adds real setup friction versus SaaS VM tools; competent security engineers cope, but time-to-first-scan is longer.
Ecosystem7/10
7 - strong within Rapid7's suite and standard SIEM/ticketing integrations; narrower outside Rapid7's own stack.
Support7/10
7 - active maintenance (v8.9.1 released June 2025); Rapid7 enterprise support on paid tiers; Community Edition has limited official support.

What it really is

Nexpose — Rapid7's on-premise network vulnerability scanner with risk-based prioritization.

Our take

Nexpose is Rapid7's established on-premises vulnerability management platform, offering a free Community Edition (up to 32 IPs) and an Enterprise tier on custom quotes. The DB labels it 'free_trial' only — more accurately it is freemium, with a perpetual free tier plus a 30-day enterprise trial. Rapid7 is gradually steering customers toward InsightVM (its cloud-based successor) and the newer Exposure Command platform, but Nexpose continues to receive active maintenance updates (v8.9.1, June 2025).

Why we rate it

Nexpose's Real Risk Score and deep Rapid7 ecosystem integration make it a credible enterprise choice; the no-cost Community Edition gives security teams a genuine on-ramp before committing to a custom contract.

The catch

Enterprise pricing is opaque and quote-only; Rapid7's strategic focus is shifting to InsightVM and Exposure Command, raising long-term lifecycle questions for the standalone Nexpose product.

Best for
Enterprises requiring on-premise vulnerability scanning without cloud data transfer
Security teams already invested in the Rapid7 ecosystem (InsightIDR, Metasploit)
Orgs evaluating vulnerability management risk-free via the Community Edition
Not good for
Small teams needing transparent, self-serve subscription pricing
Cloud-native organisations that prefer SaaS-delivered VM tools
Teams needing native container or cloud-asset coverage (InsightVM covers those)
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: on-premise installation and network configuration required before first scan; Community Edition is quicker to spin up but capped at 32 IPs.
Scale breakpoint
Custom enterprise contracts kick in immediately beyond the Community tier; scaling to thousands of assets demands negotiated pricing and dedicated on-prem infrastructure.
Walled garden
Moderate: integrates with Rapid7 ecosystem and common SIEM/ticketing tools, but deeper workflow automation is tightly coupled to Rapid7's own stack.
