Conversion Gems editorial verdict
Free (10K logs/mo); Production $49/mo
Features9/10
9 - 1,600+ models, fallbacks, load balancing, semantic caching, 50+ guardrails, prompt versioning, A/B testing, 40+ observability metrics; near-complete production AI infra suite.
Value9/10
9 - free OSS self-hosted path plus real free managed tier; $49/mo Production is highly competitive vs. building equivalent infra in-house. DB $19/mo figure is incorrect.
Ease of use6/10
6 - OpenAI-compatible drop-in is fast to integrate; virtual keys, conditional routing, and guardrail config have a meaningful infra-heavy learning curve.
Ecosystem9/10
9 - 250+ LLM providers, LangChain, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, Vercel AI SDK, CrewAI, DSPy; broadest provider coverage in class.
Support7/10
7 - community plus email on free; priority support on Production; Enterprise gets dedicated CSM; acquisition adds some roadmap uncertainty.

What it really is

Portkey — open-source AI gateway and production control plane that unifies routing, observability, and guardrails across 1,600+ LLM models.

Our take

Portkey is far more than a prompt-testing tool — it is production infrastructure: a sub-1ms proxy layer that adds fallbacks, load balancing, semantic caching, cost tracking, and 50+ guardrails to any LLM stack via a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint. DB listed $19/mo, but the managed Production tier is $49/mo; a genuinely free Developer tier (10K logs/month) and a fully open-source self-hosted path also exist. Note: Palo Alto Networks announced acquisition of Portkey (April 2026, expected to close July 2026), which may shift the managed cloud roadmap.

Why we rate it

Portkey collapses the reliability and observability stack most teams would otherwise build from scratch: fallbacks, retries, load balancing, semantic caching, PII masking, and budget guardrails in one OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The Apache 2.0 OSS gateway is genuinely production-grade.

The catch

Semantic caching and LLM-based guardrails require the $49/mo paid tier; self-hosted lacks the observability dashboard; Palo Alto Networks acquisition adds near-term roadmap uncertainty; no hard LLM cost caps by default risk bill shock.

Best for
Engineering teams shipping production LLM features needing multi-provider fallbacks and cost tracking
Enterprises in regulated industries requiring SOC2, HIPAA, and audit trails
Teams using 3+ LLM providers who want unified switching and per-model analytics
Not good for
Solo hobby projects where full observability infrastructure is overkill
Teams needing predictable all-in LLM billing (provider costs are billed separately)
Organizations uncomfortable with the pending Palo Alto Networks acquisition uncertainties
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: drop-in OpenAI-compatible endpoint integrates in minutes; advanced routing rules and guardrail configuration takes hours to days.
Scale breakpoint
At very high request volumes, users report rate-limiting on the managed cloud tier; self-hosted removes this but requires your own infrastructure management.
Walled garden
Low: Apache 2.0 OSS gateway, standard OpenAI-compatible API, log exports available; no proprietary model lock-in.

Alternatives

Step up

LiteLLM self-hosted or AWS Bedrock Gateway for teams wanting full infrastructure control after the acquisition.

Lighter alternative

OpenRouter for basic multi-provider routing without full observability overhead.
