What it really is

RTranslator — free, open-source, offline real-time voice and text translation app for Android.

Our take

RTranslator is a fully free, Apache 2.0-licensed Android app that runs AI translation entirely on-device using Meta's NLLB and OpenAI's Whisper models — no internet, no ads, no subscription. The DB mislabels it as 'Freemium / Free Trial' and categorises it under 'AI Audio & Voice'; it is in fact a completely free open-source translation tool with no paid tier whatsoever.

Why we rate it

Rare combination of zero cost, full offline capability, and genuine open-source transparency. Running Whisper + NLLB locally on Android with real-time Bluetooth conversation mode is technically impressive and privacy-respecting.

The catch

Android-only (no iOS); requires at least 6 GB RAM for smooth performance; initial 1.2 GB model download needed; some components (ML Kit) still closed-source until v3.0.

Best for
Travelers needing offline translation in low-connectivity areas
Privacy-sensitive users who cannot send audio to cloud APIs
Developers wanting open-source, self-hostable on-device translation
Not good for
iPhone or iPad users (Android only)
Teams needing document or enterprise-grade localization workflows
Users on older or low-RAM Android devices (min 6 GB RAM recommended)
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: sideload APK from GitHub then wait for a ~1.2 GB model download before first use. No sign-up required.
Scale breakpoint
On-device compute is the ceiling — translation speed degrades on low-end hardware; no cloud fallback.
Walled garden
Low: Apache 2.0 license, no account, no data sent to servers. Zero lock-in.
