From ~$75/user/yr (ZixEncrypt)
Features7/10
7 - Strong encryption modes, policy automation, mobile BYOD app, archiving add-on; roadmap and UI lag newer cloud-native rivals.
Value5/10
5 - $75–95/user/yr is steep for single-purpose email encryption; ROI only clear for orgs facing heavy compliance penalties.
Ease of use6/10
6 - Transparent for Zix-to-Zix traffic but gateway setup requires IT effort and non-Zix recipients face a portal login step.
Ecosystem6/10
6 - Solid Outlook and Exchange/O365 integrations; now part of OpenText portfolio but limited native third-party app connectors.
Support7/10
7 - Enterprise-grade dedicated account teams and OpenText support infrastructure; responsive on paid plans.

What it really is

ZixCorp Secure Email (now OpenText Cybersecurity) — enterprise email encryption, compliance, and threat protection for regulated industries.

Our take

ZixCorp was acquired by OpenText in 2021 and its email encryption products (ZixMail, ZixEncrypt, ZixGateway) now ship under the OpenText Cybersecurity brand — the product line is very much alive. The DB-listed $5/user/month is slightly understated; current reseller pricing runs ~$75/user/year for ZixEncrypt (~$6.25/mo) and ~$95/user/year for ZixMail (~$7.92/mo). DB price_tier 'free_trial' is remapped to 'paid' with a 30-day free trial noted separately.

Why we rate it

Zix has been the compliance-email gold standard for two decades; its ZixDirectory (tens of millions of enrolled addresses) makes transparent encryption practical — no user training required for Zix-to-Zix delivery. Under OpenText, support infrastructure is enterprise-grade and the product roadmap continues.

The catch

The OpenText acquisition has slowed innovation; the UI feels dated versus cloud-native competitors. Non-Zix recipients must log into a web portal, which frustrates end users. Pricing is opaque beyond the entry tier and scales steeply.

Best for
Healthcare and financial orgs needing HIPAA/GLBA-compliant outbound email
Teams exchanging sensitive data with other Zix network members transparently
IT admins who want policy-based auto-encryption without end-user training
Not good for
SMBs or startups seeking a free or low-cost encryption option
Teams outside regulated industries where lighter tools suffice
Organizations wanting a modern self-serve SaaS experience with transparent pricing
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: gateway deployment requires DNS and mail-flow reconfiguration; ZixMail Outlook add-in installs quickly but IT policy tuning takes days.
Scale breakpoint
Pricing becomes opaque at 50+ users (ZixEncrypt) and 100+ users (ZixMail), requiring direct sales negotiation; per-user costs remain high at mid-market scale.
Walled garden
Moderate: ZixDirectory creates a proprietary network effect — migrating away means losing seamless transparent encryption for all counterparties on the Zix network.
