Employers hire HireRight, a Nashville-based background screening company, to verify candidates' employment, education, criminal and other records. HireRight's candidate help pages link to the Fair Credit Reporting Act summary of your rights, describe a free dispute process for US reports and say the company does not make the hiring decision or explain why an employer decided as it did. HireRight's own 28 June 2024 announcement says investment funds affiliated with General Atlantic and Stone Point Capital completed their acquisition of it. HireRight publishes no prices, and employers request a customized quote (checked 29 October 2026).

The bottom line

A fit for employers that want one screening provider and accept quote-based pricing; candidates take hiring questions to the employer and, for US and Canadian reports, requests for report copies and disputes to HireRight.

What it really isA global employment background screening company, based in Nashville, that employers hire and buy from by quote.
Our takeHireRight lists criminal, verification, drug and health, and driving-record screening services, says its screening covers 200+ countries and territories, and runs a detailed candidate help center for status, copies and disputes.
It publishes no prices, and its candidate pages are explicit that it does not make hiring decisions.
Why we rate itHireRight states its coverage, integrations, dispute timeline (30 days, up to 45 in limited circumstances) and ownership date on its own pages; pricing is opaque by design.
The catchThere is no public price list, so comparing costs needs a sales conversation, and HireRight cannot tell candidates why an employer made a hiring decision.

Best / not good for

Best for
  • Employers that screen candidates in many countries
  • Regulated hiring that needs drug, health and driving-record checks
  • Teams that need integrations with applicant tracking systems
Not good for
  • Small teams that want a posted price per report
  • Candidates seeking the reason for a hiring decision, since HireRight says only the employer knows it
Trade-offs

Friction report

Trade-offs to know before signing up.

  1. Time to value
Sales-led: employers request a quote first; HireRight says an average check takes two to four business days once ordered.
  2. Scale breakpoint
Pricing is custom from the first order; no published tiers.
  3. Walled garden
For reports outside the US and Canada, HireRight says corrections must be requested through the employer, not from HireRight.

How candidates and employers each deal with HireRight

The employer is HireRight's customer and orders the check; the candidate completes an invitation and is the person the report describes. HireRight's candidate pages say it verifies what you provided against schools, past employers and public court records, and that it does not make the hiring decision or know why an employer decided as it did.

This page leaves review-site scores out because they are not first-party and cannot be checked, and it sticks to what HireRight, the FTC and the CFPB publish. HireRight's own help pages acknowledge two common causes of delay: checks take longer when courts are backlogged or a past employer or school does not respond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HireRight legit?

HireRight is a background screening company headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, and says it has provided screening for more than 30 years. Its candidate help pages describe how to request a copy of a report and file a dispute, and link to the Fair Credit Reporting Act summary of your rights. The CFPB's list of consumer reporting companies (current as of January 2025) includes HireRight under employment screening, though the CFPB says it has not independently verified the entries. In August 2012 the FTC announced that HireRight Solutions, Inc. would pay $2.6 million to settle charges under the Fair Credit Reporting Act; the FTC's own caution that charges are not findings is in the FTC answer below. If you are unsure about a message, HireRight's status article says the Request ID is in the email from HireRight Customer Support (noreply@hireright.com) sent when your invitation was completed, and that one-time codes come from do-not-reply@hireright.com. Sender names can be faked, so start from support.hireright.com yourself instead of a link (checked 29 October 2026).

Who owns HireRight?

HireRight's own announcement dated 28 June 2024 says HireRight Holdings Corporation completed its sale to investment funds affiliated with General Atlantic, L.P. and Stone Point Capital LLC in an all-cash merger with a total enterprise value of about $1.7 billion. The company's shares stopped trading on the New York Stock Exchange when the deal closed. Its website footer names HireRight, LLC (checked 29 October 2026).

Why does HireRight ask me for extra documents?

HireRight may ask you for a W-2 or other information when it has difficulty reaching a former employer or school, and it says having the document ready speeds things up. Its help center says it generally checks what you gave in your resume, invitation form or interviews against the source: schools for education, past employers or their agents for work history, and public court records for criminal history. HireRight says an average check typically takes between two and four business days, longer when courts are backlogged or a source does not reply. You can check status with HireRightBot on support.hireright.com using the Request ID from the email HireRight sends once your invitation is completed, or in the Applicant Center through the link in that invitation. HireRight says it does not make the hiring decision, so questions about your candidacy go to the employer.

What did the FTC's 2012 case against HireRight Solutions involve?

In August 2012 the FTC announced that HireRight Solutions, Inc. would pay $2.6 million to settle charges that it violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act by failing to use reasonable procedures to assure the maximum possible accuracy of its reports, failing to give consumers copies of their reports and failing to reinvestigate disputes. The FTC said it was the first time it had charged an employment background screening firm under that law, and that the settlement, a proposed consent decree filed on 8 August 2012 and subject to court approval, bars the company from continuing the practices it alleged. The FTC's own note says a complaint is not a finding that the law was violated and a consent judgment is not an admission of a violation. This is 2012 history from the FTC's press release, and it does not describe how HireRight operates today. HireRight Holdings' 2021 filing with the SEC refers to the same action in its risk factors (checked 29 October 2026).

What can I do if my HireRight report is wrong?

For a US report, HireRight's help center says you may file a dispute with HireRight for free, and that a reinvestigation may take up to 30 days, up to 45 days in limited circumstances. Start from the dispute form linked on support.hireright.com, or use the telephone, mail or fax contacts on that page. HireRight says it does not know why an employer made a hiring decision, so context and decision questions go to the employer. You can also request a copy of your report at any time, and HireRight says it will list the customers who may have received it in the last 2 years. For reports outside the US and Canada, HireRight says corrections must be requested through the employer. The FTC adds that an employer who rejects you over a report must tell you how to reach the reporting company, and that a free second copy can be requested within 60 days of that decision (checked 29 October 2026).
