Conversion Gems editorial verdict
From ~$5,000 (one-time fee)
Features7/10
7 - comprehensive PIMS with EMR, DICOM, inventory, telemedicine, and 250+ reports; on-premise limits real-time cloud capabilities.
Value5/10
5 - ~$5,000 one-time can be cost-effective long-term but add-ons, hardware, and support contracts add up; Capterra users rate value 3.7/5.
Ease of use4/10
4 - on-premise setup with server infrastructure demands IT resources; not a plug-and-play solution for small clinics.
Ecosystem7/10
7 - strong within Covetrus ecosystem (vRxPro, CUBEX, Intelligent Inventory, DICOM labs); limited outside that orbit.
Support6/10
6 - Covetrus offers dedicated vet software support channels but on-premise legacy software support has mixed user feedback.

What it really is

Impromed — on-premise veterinary practice management software (PIMS) by Covetrus.

Our take

Impromed (now branded under Covetrus) is a mature, on-premise veterinary PIMS used by 2,500+ practices for scheduling, EMR, billing, inventory, and 250+ built-in reports. The DB has several mislabels: it is not cloud-based but on-premise; pricing is a one-time fee of approximately $5,000, not $120/mo; there is no free trial; and the category 'CRM & Sales' is incorrect — this is veterinary practice management/EMR software.

Why we rate it

Impromed earns respect for its breadth — DICOM imaging, telemedicine, forward booking, and treatment plans are all native. Its deep Covetrus supply-chain integration is a genuine differentiator for practices already buying through Covetrus.

The catch

On-premise architecture requires server hardware and IT overhead; no cloud access out of the box. Mixed value-for-money ratings (3.7/5) suggest hidden add-on costs. Cloud-first competitors are increasingly outpacing it on mobility and automatic updates.

Best for
Established veterinary clinics preferring a one-time perpetual license over monthly SaaS fees
Practices already embedded in the Covetrus supply and pharmacy ecosystem
Multi-doctor clinics needing robust inventory, DICOM imaging, and 250+ reporting options
Not good for
New or small practices with limited IT infrastructure for on-premise server setup
Veterinary teams wanting true cloud/mobile-first access without server synchronization
Practices seeking a free trial or low-cost entry before committing
Friction report
Time to value
Slow: on-premise installation, server configuration, and staff training required before first use — expect days to weeks, not minutes.
Scale breakpoint
Adding locations or remote staff is constrained by the server-sync mobile model; cloud competitors scale more smoothly for multi-site or mobile practices.
Walled garden
High: deep integration with Covetrus products (inventory, pharmacy, prescriptions) creates switching costs; data export paths exist but full workflow portability is limited.
