What it really is

Microsoft's cloud service for managing and securing company and personal devices and their apps.

Our take

If your company runs on Microsoft 365, check your licenses before buying anything: Business Premium, E3 and E5 already include Intune Plan 1. Its reach is wide, from Windows Autopilot to Android work profiles and Mac, and it plugs straight into Entra ID access rules. The cost of that reach is complexity. Extra tools such as Remote Help or privilege management sit in separate add-ons or bundles, and getting policies right takes a trained admin.

Why we rate it

Cross-platform device and app management tied directly to Microsoft identity and security.

The catch

Layered licensing and a real setup effort; it works best when you already use Entra ID.

Best for
Organizations on Microsoft 365
Mixed Windows, Mac and mobile fleets
BYOD programs that protect only work apps
Not good for
Apple-only teams wanting the simplest setup
Companies not using Microsoft Entra ID
Very small teams without IT staff
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: trial starts quickly, but enrollment and policy design take planning.
Scale breakpoint
Advanced needs (remote help, privilege management, analytics) add per-user add-on costs.
Walled garden
High: identity and access rely on Microsoft Entra ID.
