CrashPlan is cloud backup for business laptops, desktops and servers, plus Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Small businesses pay $88 per user a year for endpoint backup with unlimited storage, there is a 14-day trial, and a personal plan costs $10 a month per device.

CrashPlan is now separate from Code42

CrashPlan began as a Code42 product. Code42 closed the original CrashPlan for Home in October 2018, then sold the CrashPlan business to the private equity firm Mill Point Capital in August 2022. Code42 itself was acquired by Mimecast in July 2024.

CrashPlan now runs as its own company at crashplan.com and sells business plans plus a personal plan at $10 a month per device (checked 4 October 2026).

The bottom line

A solid pick for automatic business laptop backup; pair it with an archive if you need deleted files kept long term.

What it really is

A cloud backup service for business endpoints, servers and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace data, spun out of Code42.

Our take

CrashPlan does one job and prices it clearly. Endpoints get unlimited storage and versions for $88 a user a year, which is easy to budget. The retention rule matters more than the price: deleted endpoint files are gone after 90 days, so it is a recovery tool, not an archive. Servers and SaaS backups use pooled storage with automatic overage charges, so watch usage.

Why we rate it

Clear per-user pricing, unlimited endpoint versions and strong security controls.

The catch

Deleted endpoint files are kept 90 days at most, and the trial auto-bills to your card.

Best for
Small business laptop backup
Ransomware recovery
Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backup
Not good for
Long-term archives of deleted files
Users who want a no-card trial
Teams needing data stored outside the US on small plans
Friction report
Time to value
Short: sign up, install the agent and backups start automatically.
Scale breakpoint
At 250 users you move to enterprise quotes; server and SaaS storage overages add $7.50 a month per 250 GB.
Walled garden
Medium: restores go anywhere you choose, but backups live in CrashPlan's format and data centers.
