The bottom line

A genuinely free, private, no-install image editor that covers most everyday edits; great for quick graphics, not heavy pro retouching.

What it really is

A free, open-source, browser-based image editor - a lightweight Photoshop alternative with layers, filters and effects that runs entirely in your browser.

Our take

It is impressively capable for a free in-browser tool: a multi-layer system, color corrections, dozens of effects and filters, plus text and shapes, with everything processed locally so nothing is uploaded - and it works offline and is self-hostable. The honest limits are weaker selection tools and that it is not a full Photoshop replacement for pro retouching.

Best for
Quick edits, mockups and social/banner graphics
Privacy-conscious users wanting local, no-upload editing
Anyone needing a free, install-free Photoshop alternative
Not good for
Pro retouchers needing advanced selection/masking tools
Teams wanting cloud collaboration and asset management
Users needing RAW or print-grade professional workflows
Friction report
Time to value
Instant: open the site (or self-host) and start editing - no account, no install, works offline.
Scale breakpoint
Selection tooling is limited and it is not a full pro suite, so complex masking and high-end retouching hit a ceiling.
Walled garden
None - open-source, local processing, standard exports (PNG/JPG/WEBP/TIFF) and self-hostable.
