What it really is

Skyward — K-12 student information system (SIS) and ERP platform for school districts.

Our take

Skyward is a dedicated K-12 enterprise SIS and ERP suite—not a CRM as the DB categorizes it. It covers student records, finance, HR, attendance, and family communication across two product lines: the modern Qmlativ (current flagship) and the legacy SMS 2.0 (being phased out). Pricing is entirely custom and enterprise-only; the DB's 'Free Trial' price tier is incorrect.

Why we rate it

One of the few platforms purpose-built for K-12 that tightly integrates SIS and ERP. The modern Qmlativ platform brings cloud-native architecture, native MFA, and an improved help center—making it more sustainable long-term than legacy competitors still on fragmented stacks.

The catch

Enterprise-only with no self-serve trial, opaque pricing, and lengthy implementation cycles. Districts on SMS 2.0 also face a mandatory migration to Qmlativ.

Best for
K-12 districts needing integrated student information and finance/HR in one system
Districts migrating off legacy SIS platforms to a modern cloud-based solution
State-reporting-heavy environments requiring compliance-ready student records
Not good for
Private schools or tutoring centers without IT budgets for enterprise rollout
Higher education institutions (designed exclusively for K-12)
Teams needing a self-serve free trial or rapid out-of-the-box setup
Friction report
Time to value
Slow: enterprise procurement, contract negotiation, and district-wide implementation typically take several months.
Scale breakpoint
Per-enrollment cost growth and multi-school district configurations can strain smaller IT teams and budgets.
Walled garden
High: district data lives in Skyward's platform; exports are possible but cross-system integrations require custom development.
