What it really is

Free, open-source archives management software for describing collections and publishing finding aids, backed by a paying member community.

Our take

ArchivesSpace covers the archival workflow end to end, from accession to public finding aid, and speaks the metadata standards archivists need. The software costs nothing, but it is not plug-and-play: you need Java, MySQL and Solr, or a hosting partner. Membership is where support and training come from, so budget for it if you lack in-house expertise.

Why we rate it

Free, standards-based and maintained by the archives community itself.

The catch

Running it needs server skills or a paid host, and support comes with membership.

Best for
University archives and special collections
Publishing searchable finding aids
Migrating from Archivists' Toolkit or Archon
Not good for
Teams without IT support or a host
Simple item lists without archival standards
Digital preservation storage on its own
Friction report
Time to value
Days to weeks: install with Docker or arrange hosting, then load or migrate records.
Scale breakpoint
When record volume needs dedicated Solr and database tuning, or you need formal support (membership).
Walled garden
None: open source, with standard EAD, MARCXML and other exports.
