What it really is
A Chrome and Edge screen recorder that saves to Google Drive, now sold under the Castify brand.
Our take
Screencastify does the basic job fast: click the extension, pick a tab, the screen or the webcam, and the video lands in Google Drive. The free plan's 10-video cap makes it a trial more than a home. Annual prices are low for a single teacher, but monthly prices are more than double, and captions and AI editing sit on Pro.
Why we rate it
It removes nearly every step between deciding to record and sharing a link, and its Drive and Classroom ties fit schools that already run on Google Workspace.
The catch
The free plan stops at 10 videos, and monthly billing costs more than twice the yearly rate.
Best for
Teachers recording lessons and instructions
Schools on Google Workspace and Google Classroom
Teams sending quick walkthroughs from the browser
Not good for
People on browsers other than Chrome or Edge
Recordings longer than 3 hours (Pro caps videos at 180 minutes)
Anyone who needs captions without paying for Pro
Friction report
Time to value
Minutes: add the extension, sign in and record; the free plan needs no credit card.
Scale breakpoint
The 10-video cap on the free plan, then the 60-minute video limit on Starter.
Walled garden
Recordings save to your own Google Drive; we did not verify export formats.
