What it really isA hosted file-transfer service that sends files by email or link, run by WeTransfer B.V. in Amsterdam and listed by Bending Spoons as acquired in July 2024.
Our takeWeTransfer is easy to use for occasional sending, and recipients do not need an account.
The Free plan is small: 10 transfers or 3 GB in a rolling 30 days, for non-commercial use, and WeTransfer's pricing page and help center give that limit in different words. Ultimate removes the size and expiry limits at $25 a month on the US price list.
Why we rate itWeTransfer publishes every plan limit and price, but the free limit is worded two ways across its own pages and the Free plan is restricted to non-commercial use.
The catchFree allows 10 transfers or 3 GB per rolling 30 days, links expire after at most 3 days, senders need an account, and WeTransfer's terms say the service may contain advertisements.

Best / not good for

Best for
  • People who send files occasionally for personal reasons
  • Senders whose recipients will not create an account
  • Individuals who need no size limit and can pay for Ultimate
Not good for
  • Business or client work on the Free plan, which WeTransfer limits to non-commercial use
  • Anyone who needs links to last longer than 3 days without paying
  • Solo users, since the Teams plan has a minimum of 2 users
Trade-offs

Friction report

Trade-offs to know before signing up.

  1. Time to value
A first transfer needs an email address and a verification code, after which WeTransfer creates a free account.
  2. Scale breakpoint
Free stops at 10 transfers or 3 GB in a rolling 30 days; Starter stops at 300 GB, and only Ultimate and above remove the transfer limit.
  3. Walled garden
WeTransfer says its default storage per account is 2 TB, with Teams at up to 5 TB, and expired transfers can be recovered only by subscribers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WeTransfer free to use?

Yes, within limits. WeTransfer's Free plan costs $0 and is for individual, non-commercial use only, with 10 transfers or 3 GB in any rolling 30-day window and links that last up to 3 days. Recipients do not need an account, but senders do: sending has required a WeTransfer account since November 2024, which WeTransfer creates automatically after you verify your email. WeTransfer says the Free plan is not meant for business or professional work (checked 2 November 2026).

What is the free limit with WeTransfer?

The free limit is 10 transfers or 3 GB in any rolling 30-day period, with transfer links lasting up to 3 days. WeTransfer's pricing page shows '3 GB / month' and '10 transfers per month', while its help center (updated 23 October 2026) says 10 transfers or 3 GB total in any 30-day rolling window, counted over the last 30 days and not by calendar month. A December 2024 WeTransfer post says the size limit rose from 2 GB to 3 GB and that monthly limits were introduced for Free (checked 2 November 2026).

What are WeTransfer's paid plans, and what happened to Pro?

Beside Free, WeTransfer's pricing page lists Starter, Ultimate, Teams and Enterprise. A December 2024 WeTransfer post says it merged its former Pro and Premium plans into one Ultimate plan and added Starter. US list prices, read from a US location on 3 November 2026 and billed monthly: Starter $10 a month for 300 GB per rolling 30 days; Ultimate $25 a month with no transfer-size limit; Teams $25 per user a month with a minimum of 2 users; Enterprise is custom. Yearly-billing prices are not listed here. WeTransfer's pricing page showed lower figures to a visitor in Israel on 2 November 2026 (Starter $8 a month or $7 billed yearly, Ultimate $23 or $19, Teams $19 per user or $16.58), so WeTransfer's price list varies by location. The December 2024 post gave Starter as $6.99 a month. Confirm the figure for your country at checkout (checked 3 November 2026).

Is WeTransfer legit and safe?

WeTransfer is run by WeTransfer B.V., which gives its address as Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 162, Amsterdam, in its privacy policy (version August 2026), and its terms of service (last updated 3 August 2026) use the same address for legal notices. Bending Spoons's own site lists it as acquired in July 2024. WeTransfer says files are encrypted in transit (TLS) and when stored (AES-256) and can be reached only through the unique links sent to sender and recipient, and its Principles of Content Protection say content is not used to train AI and is not sold. Its terms also say the service may contain advertisements and that an account inactive for 12 months without a paid plan may be deleted. Conversion Gems gives no safety verdict; the terms and privacy policy are linked from wetransfer.com (checked 2 November 2026).

Why are people stopping using WeTransfer?

WeTransfer does not publish a reason, and Conversion Gems cannot measure how many people have stopped. WeTransfer's own pages document these changes: sending required an account from November 2024; a December 2024 plan change introduced monthly limits for Free; and a July 2025 terms update, which WeTransfer said 'may have raised some concerns', included wording about machine learning that WeTransfer then removed, stating that it does not use machine learning or any form of AI to process content shared through WeTransfer. Bending Spoons lists WeTransfer as acquired in July 2024 (checked 2 November 2026).

How do I log in to WeTransfer?

Conversion Gems is a review site and cannot sign anyone in to WeTransfer. WeTransfer's official log-in page is wetransfer.com/log-in. Its help center says you can sign in with email or with a Google, Apple or Slack login, and that an account created while sending uses a code emailed to you instead of a password (checked 2 November 2026).
